Every industry will have a certain ‘busy’ season where sales and enquiries boom as a result of the particular timing. Retailers see massive influxes during June and December due to the stocktake and holiday seasons. For builders, our busy season can vary however there is one thing you can guarantee. January will always see an increase in enquiries for new homes. Why? Because most people will be on their holidays and actually have the time to visit new display homes, meet different builders and ultimately, make their final decision.
An issue tends to arise – a battle if you will – between wanting to grow your business and taking a break to have some personal time. So how do you find a solution where you can have the time to take that relaxing break while your business continues to operate smoothly? The answer lies within your team.
As an employer, you can choose to remain open during the holidays (with the exception of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day) meaning your team would be required to work. While the entire team will not be necessary, it is important your sales consultants are there to take any new enquiries. By having at least one point of contact available your business can continue to operate and show attention to clients without you having to sacrifice your holidays.
If you choose to completely close your office for an extended period of time you risk the chance of losing sales. Most clients will make an enquiry with multiple builders during the decision-making process. Many of your competitors, particularly volume builders, will continue to operate through this time and respond to these clients. This small factor can be enough to persuade that client to build with your competitor as information is quickly received. They can have their initial fee paid while you’re still relaxing by the beach.
It’s important to remember that when closing an office, you will then have to play catch up upon your return. If your office has been closed for three weeks, there will be endless emails and phone calls awaiting your return in addition to the tasks you would usually need to fulfil. While it’s easy to say we’ll be gone for three weeks, your responses to potential clients will be more delayed than you may initially think.
While you may choose to operate your business how you see fit, you must consider the facts when making these decisions as they could have a large impact on your business.
