The comfort zone is your safe place – a familiar place where you remain in control and are able to freely go with the motions and follow what has worked in the past. However, staying in your comfort zone can actually become a very dangerous place, particularly if you want to see change or growth.
In our careers people often tend to fall into complacency and over time take less risks. This is where we can actually limit ourselves, our development and for many independent builders – their business.
If you’re happy in your career or your business as it stands, there is no need to make a change. There is nothing wrong with being satisfied with your current conditions. However, if your hunger for growth is continuing to escalate then you will need to make a change. This may include taking on a new responsibility, implementing a new strategy or even making the decision to join a franchise.
Whatever the change, you will be required to step out of your comfort zone which is where fear can often overrule desire for growth. You have to be brave to take the risk, and if you do youwill often find the risk will lead to a great reward.
Here are our top three reasons why you should step out of your comfort zone:
- By taking risks and trying new things you learn what you are truly capable of
The old cliché ‘you never know until you try’ has never rang more true! Until you take the opportunity to try something new, you will not actually know what you are truly capable of. As you begin to venture out, you may find you can actually excel at new tasks. In turn you will also discover what you are not interested in, which is always a great learning curve.
- You need to experiment – and even fail in order to learn
Janine Allis, Founder of Boost Juice amongst many other successful ventures famously says you have to fail. ‘Without failure and mistakes you are not trying hard enough. Mistakes are our greatest lesson. Don’t make them twice.’ She is not the first to recognise the significance of failure in success, and she will not be the last. You need to step up to challenges and try something new in order to determine if it is successful or not – this is why the process becomes a learning curve. By changing your thinking and seeing failure as a positive, you will find it a lot easier to overcome your fear of failing.
- Feed your passion – don’t get stuck in the rut
Without growth or change you will fall into a repetitive rut, lose excitement and ultimately lose your hunger to improve. By creating challenges your passion will continue to grow, and you will begin to feel invigorated and driven. That mindset will help you push yourself and your business further. Passion is vital to success, don’t let yours fizzle out!
In any new venture you should always do your homework! Stepping out of the comfort zone does not mean you should make any irrational decisions. Do your research, weigh up your pros and cons and make an informed decision.
